Emerging Plant Disease and Global Food Security Symposium

Partners Planning and Training Workshop: Biological Control of the Invasive Weed Parthenium hysterophorus in East Africa

Partners will join at the planning and training workshop to develop a detailed work plan to implement the Parthenium Project Objectives:

Conduct training on culturing of bioagents under quarantine and field
Discuss and develop a common protocol for the implementation of each objective
Knowledge of methodology for parthenium survey, socio-economic and biodiversity impact data collection, biocontrol agent evaluation and pasture trials
Familiarize project partners with IPM IL regulations, expectations, as well as monitoring and evaluation procedures.

Entomological Society of America 2015 Meeting

The Entomological Society of America annual meeting is conducted in association with the annual meetings of the Soil Science Society of America, Crop Science Society of America, and Agronomy Society of America. At least 6,000 participants are expected.

International Conference of Eco-friendly Applied Biological Control of Agricultural Pests and Phytopathogens

The IPM Innovation Lab will conduct a workshop on “Management of the South American Tomato Leafminer, Tuta absoluta” on August 25, 2015 starting at 7.30 pm and lasting two to three hours.

This workshop will review the biology, spread, damage, monitoring and the control tactics including regulatory, physical, cultural, chemical and biological methods. There will be a discussion on current Tuta absoluta projects worldwide and the possible initiation of national, regional and global projects for the management of T. absoluta and the current and potential role of donor agencies.

Workshop on Biological control and management of Parthenium hysterophorus

The purpose of this four-day workshop was to review the current status of this invasive weed and discuss management practices that can be used to abate its adverse impacts. The workshop brought together scientists working on Parthenium from Africa and other parts of the world who shared information on its biology and management.

Workshop on Seed-and-seedling-borne diseases of vegetables
June 2-8, 2014, in Hyderabad, India
The main purpose of this workshop was to present results over time from the IPM Innovation Lab research programs, the current status of seed-borne diseases, and the role of the seed supply chain in their management. As part of the workshop, participants toured the National Institute of Plant Health Management and seed production facilities in Hyderabad.

Workshop on Invasive species identification and management in the tropics

May 12-15, 2014, in Dakar, Senegal
The main purpose of this workshop was to identify invasive species that are appearing in the tropics and to review current knowledge about managing them. The workshop also focused on Ralstonia solanacearum (bacterial wilt) in solanaceous vegetables, as well as the papaya mealybug. Activities included demonstrations and practical exercises in plant grafting and disease identification.

Workshop on Seed-borne Virus Diseases of Vegetable Crops
April 7-11, 2014, in Kathmandu, Nepal
Plant virologists and pathologists from the United States and Nepal presented the latest findings on seed-borne vegetable diseases of vegetable crops. They reviewed the status of the seed production and distribution chain as it relates to the management of virus diseases transmitted through seed.

Nov. 26-28, 2013, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The purpose of this three-day workshop was to review current knowledge about Tuta absoluta and its spread, as well as methods to control the pest. A visit to a lab and a tomato-growing region in Melkassa provided a valuable practical learning experience.
