Two-year Graduate Research Assistantship beginning Fall 2016 for a masters’ student at Virginia Tech to support gender research for the Vegetable Crops IPM in Asia project (https://ipmil.cired.vt.edu/our-work/projects/phase-v-projects/vegetable-crops-and-mango-ipm-in-asia/). The project is part of the Integrated Pest Management Innovation Lab (IPM IL) funded by USAID (https://ipmil.cired.vt.edu/about-us/mission/). IPM IL is a global, multidisciplinary program that develops and implements approaches to integrated pest management to help raise the standard of living and improve the environment in countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The successful applicant will conduct thesis field research in Nepal or Cambodia (to be decided by the advisor) working with women’s organizations. They will apply a cultural and political ecology approach to gendered spaces and gendered knowledge in IPM using primarily qualitative methods including participatory mapping. The student will work directly with the Women and Gender in International Development Program (http://www.oired.vt.edu/wgd/index.html) of the Office of International Research, Education and Development (http://www.oired.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech. Responsibilities include development of research instruments, data analysis, production of a publishable paper, and administrative support for the project. Funding includes tuition and fees, fieldwork expenses, and a 12-month stipend. Funding for second year dependent on performance. Application deadline is April 8th or until position is filled.
